Seaside Moments

“Jesus…sat by the seaside.” (Matt. 13:1) On His way to and from teaching, Jesus sat. We search for verbs…did He slump, sprawl, or perch? Had He barely stretched out His legs before the murmur of voices began? Was He simply grabbing a quick drink of the sounds and smells of the Sea of Tiberius? Was He looking past the water, contemplating the needs of the crowd that would soon gather?

There are very few “sitting” moments in a teacher’s day. Sure, you may find yourself attached to your chair-- marking, observing, helping--but not the “cup your chin in your hands” sit where you can breathe deeply and just—well…sit.

If anyone understands that teaching is taxing, it is the Lord. If anyone knows the need for rest and how rarely it occurs, it is He. So, enjoy your seaside moments with relish (or without)—and buoy yourself up for the rest of the day.
